Google wants you to scan QR code to prove you’re human online

In a significant shift for online security, Google is developing a new form of reCAPTCHA that may replace traditional image-based verification with a QR code scanning method on mobile devices. This innovative approach would allow users to prove their humanity by scanning a QR code with their smartphone, moving away from the conventional task of identifying objects like cars and bicycles in images. The potential implementation of this system came to light through screenshots shared on Reddit by a user known as 'gib_me_gold' in a subreddit dedicated to discussing Google’s practices. While the change could simplify the verification process for many users accustomed to solving repetitive image puzzles, it has raised concerns among some internet users regarding privacy and data tracking. According to the shared screenshots, the QR code verification is intended to function through Google Play Services on Android devices. However, Google has yet to provide specific details about how the new system will operate. One screenshot referenced a Google support page that indicates a compatible mobile device is necessary to complete the verification process. For Android users, this requires having Google Play Services version 25.41.30 or higher installed. If this mechanism proves accurate, the act of scanning the QR code could link the website visit to the user's Android device, irrespective of the browser being used or whether the user is signed into their Google account. Discussions surrounding this update suggest that while there’s no explicit confirmation that details from Google Play Services would be shared with visited websites, there is a lingering concern that Google could access this information. For iPhone users, the same support page reportedly offers a solution by suggesting the download of a reCAPTCHA app to facilitate QR-based verification without relying on Google Play Services. Further insights indicate that this feature has been under development since October 2025, amplifying the conversation about the practical implications of Google’s next-generation reCAPTCHA, particularly for Android users and those who prefer not to utilize Google’s extensive tracking systems.
