Google tests AI-powered weather summaries in mobile search: Report

In a move to enhance user experience, Google is currently trialing an innovative artificial intelligence feature that delivers concise, text-based weather summaries directly in its mobile Search interface. This feature has been spotted by select users across the United States while searching for localized weather updates via the Google app on both Android and iOS platforms. As reported by 9to5Google, the AI-generated summaries are strategically positioned between the hourly forecast and the 10-day outlook, aiming to provide users with quick, digestible weather insights. Each summary includes essential information such as wind speed, chances of rain or storms, atmospheric pressure changes, and temperature trends. At this stage, the feature appears to be in a preliminary testing phase, with accessibility limited to a handful of regions. For instance, queries like “weather Los Angeles” and “weather San Diego” successfully triggered the new summary, while other areas did not produce the same results. Users have reported difficulties accessing these summaries for the highlighted cities, suggesting that the rollout is confined to a specific group. Alongside the text summary, the AI section features a small icon that links to external sources for more detailed weather data. Additionally, Google includes a disclaimer stating, “Generative AI is experimental,” highlighting that the tool is still under development. Currently, this feature is available exclusively on the Google app and mobile web, with no presence on desktop platforms or for users not logged into their Google accounts. As of now, Google has not disclosed any plans for a broader release or an estimated timeline for wider accessibility. This initiative is part of the tech giant's ongoing strategy to weave generative AI into its various services, aiming to deliver more relevant and user-friendly information across its platforms.
