Google Search rolls out Gemini’s Canvas in AI Mode to all US users

Google has officially rolled out its Canvas feature in AI Mode to all English-speaking users in the United States, following its introduction as part of Google Labs last year. This innovative tool is designed to assist users in organizing projects and conducting in-depth research seamlessly within Google Search. With the latest update, users can draft documents and create tailored tools directly through the search interface. Google has highlighted various use cases for Canvas, such as constructing study guides by uploading class notes and other resources. The functionality extends to converting research reports into webpages, quizzes, or audio summaries, showing significant overlap with Google’s existing research tool, Notebook LM. Users can interact with Canvas by simply describing their ideas, which prompts the tool to generate code for transforming those ideas into shareable applications or games. Furthermore, Canvas proves beneficial for refining creative writing drafts and soliciting project feedback. Already integrated with Gemini, Google AI Pro, and Google AI Ultra subscribers have had early access to the advanced model, Gemini 3, which features a substantial 1 million-token context window for more intricate projects. The broader availability of Canvas means more users can now tap into its capabilities through Google’s AI Mode, thus expanding its outreach significantly. To utilize Canvas, users need to select the new option from the tool menu (+) while in AI Mode, then describe their desired creation. This action opens a side panel where users can aggregate information from the web and Google’s Knowledge Graph. For those looking to build prototypes or applications, the tool allows them to test functionalities, view underlying code, and make adjustments through interaction with Gemini. Canvas faces competition from similar offerings provided by rivals like OpenAI and Anthropic. However, while ChatGPT's Canvas feature activates automatically based on user queries, Google and Claude from Anthropic require more proactive user engagement. Both platforms, nonetheless, are geared towards aiding users in writing and project development.
