Google has made its AI-based note-taking application, NotebookLM, accessible to a younger audience, previously restricted to those aged 18 and older. The tech company has announced that the app is now available to Google Workspace for Education users of any age, alongside consumers aged 13 and above. This strategic move aims to equip younger students with a powerful AI research tool, enhancing their ability to comprehend and engage with their educational materials. Students can now utilize features such as converting notes into podcast-style Audio Overviews and creating interactive Mind Maps to visually represent their ideas. Recently, NotebookLM also introduced Video Overviews, enabling users to transform notes, PDFs, and images into engaging visual presentations. The decision to broaden access comes amid growing concerns regarding data privacy and the potential misuse of AI in educational settings. In response, Google has implemented stricter content policies for users under 18, ensuring the platform minimizes inappropriate responses. Notably, user interactions and uploads are neither reviewed by humans nor utilized for AI training purposes. This expansion aligns closely with the recent introduction of a study mode for ChatGPT by OpenAI, highlighting the escalating competition within the AI education landscape.
