In a significant update, Google is transforming its Search experience by introducing a new feature that allows mobile users to engage in follow-up questions with AI-generated summaries, known as AI Overviews. This feature, which aims to create a more conversational interaction, is now accessible directly within the search results, inviting users to delve deeper into their inquiries. Previously, users could only interact with Google's AI models through a separate AI Mode or the Gemini chatbot. However, with the integration of the "Ask anything" text box into AI Overviews, Google is effectively merging its AI capabilities and pushing the boundaries of traditional search. Robby Stein, Google's VP of product for Search, emphasized the importance of creating a seamless conversational flow, stating, "In our testing, we've found that people prefer an experience that flows naturally into a conversation — and that asking follow-up questions while keeping the context from AI Overviews makes Search more helpful." This shift comes after Google began testing the feature on mobile devices late last year, though it has not been without controversy. Some publishers expressed concerns that this new functionality could further diminish web traffic by providing direct answers from Google without the need to visit external sites. Ed Newton-Rex, CEO of Fairly Trained AI, criticized the update on social media, suggesting it undermines the value of original content. Despite these concerns, Google maintains that the changes are beneficial, reporting an increase in user queries and claiming that its AI modifications have resulted in higher quality clicks. Elizabeth Reid, head of Search at Google, noted that higher-quality clicks indicate users are finding what they need without immediately bouncing away. As Google continues to refine its AI offerings, the distinctions between AI Mode, AI Overviews, and the Gemini chatbot are expected to become less pronounced. Benjamin Kaufman, product manager for AI Mode, hinted at this convergence, indicating a future where users can simply ask Google anything and receive tailored responses. Additionally, Google recently announced that its latest AI model, Gemini 3, will be the default for AI Overviews worldwide, showcasing the company's commitment to innovation in the AI space. With billions of searches conducted daily, Google’s strategic advancements position it favorably within the competitive landscape of search technology, contributing to its impressive market cap surge earlier this month.
