Google has unveiled a suite of new personalization tools aimed at enhancing user control over the content displayed on its Search and Shopping platforms. This update introduces features tailored to individual browsing behaviors, preferred websites, and shopping interests, all while maintaining the fundamental structure of search results. A notable addition currently being tested through Google’s Labs is the 'Preferred Sources' feature, allowing users to prioritize content from chosen websites. Available in English in the US and India, users can opt in by clicking a star icon next to the Top Stories section. When selected sites publish fresh, relevant content, it will be highlighted more prominently in the Top Stories area, clearly marked alongside other news sources. For recurring topics, Google Search will automatically bring the latest updates to the forefront for users who have previously searched those subjects. New information will be displayed in sections like Top Stories and 'What People Are Saying,' with a dropdown in recent searches alerting users to new material. Furthermore, frequently visited websites will be highlighted in search results, provided that personalization is enabled and the content aligns with the user's queries. This change is designed to help users effortlessly return to familiar sources. In the Discover feed, users now have the option to follow specific sports teams, triggering tailored content such as scores and match highlights across different leagues. On the shopping front, Google is incorporating personal style preferences into its search results. When exploring categories like fashion and accessories, users may encounter prompts to save their favorite styles, which will inform future product recommendations. Google Shopping has also revamped its homepage to present a customized feed. After selecting preferred shopping categories, users will see a curated stream of videos and product listings relevant to their interests. This platform also features options for deal browsing, price comparisons, and insight into new trends. All these features rely on user settings, allowing for adjustments or complete deactivation of personalization through account preferences.
