Google's Project Zero team has demonstrated the potential for securing remote code execution on the modems of Pixel phones via Internet connections. This revelation has led Google to reassess its security protocols for these critical low-level systems. Instead of overhauling the existing modem software, the strategy involved integrating a safer, Rust-based component into the Pixel 10 modem. This is significant because cellular modems often operate like a black box, running legacy C and C++ code that presents a tempting target for attackers. The crux of the problem lies in the challenging nature of memory management within these systems, which can result in memory-unsafe firmware on devices. Such vulnerabilities allow malicious actors to exploit issues like buffer overflows and memory leaks, posing a serious risk to device integrity. The reliance on outdated technology is partly due to the inertia surrounding embedded systems, as companies have been crafting modem firmware based on 3GPP specifications for many years, leading to considerable technical debt. Additionally, modems must function in real time to efficiently transmit and receive data, a task well-suited for the speed of C and C++ code. Google's recent demonstration of a hack on the Pixel's Exynos-based modem is indicative of a larger issue. Project Zero researchers have uncovered over two dozen vulnerabilities within Exynos modems in recent years, with 18 categorized as severe. While these flaws were addressed post-discovery, the intricate nature of modem code means that more vulnerabilities are likely hidden within, waiting to be discovered by malicious entities. To enhance modem security, it is essential to tackle these memory management loopholes, and Rust emerges as a strong candidate for this task. Although Rust is not the only memory-safe programming language available—languages like Python and C# also offer safer memory management options—many depend on garbage collection, which can slow down processes. This delay is unacceptable for real-time modem operations, underscoring the importance of adopting Rust for improved safety without compromising performance.
