Google has a new Preferred Sources feature in India: What does it mean, how to use it?

Google has rolled out an innovative feature in India, named Preferred Sources, aimed at enriching the search experience for users by showcasing content from their favorite news outlets directly within the Top Stories section. This feature is now being implemented and will gradually become accessible to all users in the upcoming days. As outlined in a recent update on Google's official blog, this enhancement allows users to tailor their news consumption by highlighting articles from trusted publications and niche platforms, including local newspapers and specialized blogs. When users configure their Preferred Sources, content from these selected outlets will gain increased visibility in Top Stories, ensuring that relevant articles are prominently displayed. In addition, a unique “From your sources” section may appear in search results to further streamline access to personalized content. Users have the flexibility to choose multiple preferred sources and can modify their selections at any time. Initial trials conducted through Google's Labs program revealed that over half of the participants selected four or more outlets to follow. Those who were already part of the Labs initiative will see their current preferences automatically transferred to the new feature. Setting up the Preferred Sources is straightforward and includes three steps: searching for a news topic, selecting preferred outlets by clicking the icon next to the Top Stories, and refreshing the results to view content from the chosen sites. While the feature prioritizes these sources, it will still display articles from other publishers to maintain a balanced perspective. This initiative promises benefits for both users and publishers. For readers, it simplifies access to relevant and trustworthy content without the hassle of sifting through numerous pages. Publishers stand to gain increased visibility and engagement with their dedicated audiences. Additionally, Google has introduced a specialized help center for publishers, offering insights on how to encourage readers to designate their sites as preferred sources. This update reflects a growing trend towards personalization in online search and news delivery, with Google striving to empower users to make their search experience more relevant while ensuring a diversity of viewpoints.
