AI Overviews are coming to your Gmail at work

At the recent Google Cloud Next conference, the tech giant unveiled several updates to its Workspace offerings, prominently featuring the introduction of AI Overviews for Gmail. This innovative capability, initially designed to summarize Google Search results, is now set to assist users in the workplace by providing concise summaries of email content. With this new feature, Gmail users can pose questions in natural language and receive succinct answers without the need to sift through multiple emails. Google envisions this tool as a means to streamline inquiries related to business topics often discussed via email, such as performance updates, project milestones, invoices, and travel details. The AI Overviews function will generate quick summaries from a variety of emails and conversations to facilitate easier information retrieval. While there are varying opinions on relying on AI for problem-solving, Google is leading the charge in integrating this technology into its products and services. According to the company, the AI Overviews feature in Gmail will automatically be activated for users with Gemini for Workspace and Gmail enabled, as well as those with access to Workspace Intelligence. It's important for end users to also enable features like 'Smart features in Gmail, Chat, and Meet' and 'Google Workspace smart features' to fully utilize this functionality. Previously restricted to consumers with Google AI Pro and Ultra subscriptions, this feature is now rolling out to business, enterprise, and education customers. In addition, Google is extending the availability of AI Overviews in Drive to eligible Workspace and Google AI plans, moving it out of beta and into widespread use.
