Google adds Gemini to Chrome for all users in push to bolster AI search

Google is taking a significant step in integrating artificial intelligence into its Chrome browser, aiming to strengthen its position against rising competition from AI-focused startups like OpenAI and Perplexity. In a recent announcement, the tech giant revealed that Gemini will be rolled out to users on Mac and Windows in the U.S., as well as on mobile devices. With Gemini, users can now seek assistance in interpreting webpage content, manage tasks across multiple tabs, and execute activities within a single tab, such as scheduling meetings or searching for YouTube videos. Rick Osterloh, Google's senior vice president overseeing platforms and devices, emphasized this evolution, stating, "We are evolving the browser to help you get the most from the web - in ways we didn't think possible even a few years ago." The competition for consumer AI supremacy is intensifying, particularly as internet browsers serve as crucial access points for online information and content. For years, Google and Apple have dominated these distribution channels. This dominance is a key factor in the U.S. Department of Justice's attempts to compel Google to divest Chrome as part of its antitrust litigation. However, a recent ruling allowed Google to retain Chrome, largely due to the transformative impact of generative AI on the competitive landscape. Emerging AI competitors are also launching their own browsers to enhance user experiences. OpenAI introduced Operator earlier this year, enabling users to complete tasks like shopping via the Instacart app, and is reportedly developing a browser based on the open-source Chromium code. Additionally, Anthropic recently unveiled a browser-based AI agent powered by its Claude models, while Perplexity launched its AI task-focused browser, Comet, for subscribers. The new Gemini feature in Chrome offers seamless integration with Google services such as Calendar, YouTube, and Maps, allowing users to access these applications without leaving their current page. Soon, it will also be available to Google Workspace users, providing enhanced enterprise-grade data protections, according to Mike Torres, Google’s vice president of product. Moreover, Google has introduced new agentic capabilities for Gemini, enabling users to request tasks such as booking appointments or ordering groceries. These features were inspired by an internal initiative known as "Project Mariner," which had garnered positive feedback from employees. Previously, access to Gemini in Chrome required specific Google subscriptions, but this update makes it more accessible with expanded functionalities.
