Chrome takes on AI browsers with tighter Gemini integration, agentic features for autonomous tasks

In 2025, the landscape of web browsing saw a transformative shift as AI-driven browsers from companies like OpenAI, Perplexity, Opera, and The Browser Company emerged, challenging Chrome’s dominance. In response, Google is now integrating advanced AI features into Chrome, the leading browser worldwide. Previously, Google introduced its AI assistant, Gemini, as a floating window within Chrome last September. However, with the latest update, Gemini will now be accessible in a permanent sidebar, enabling users to pose questions about the current page or any other open tabs seamlessly. One of the standout functionalities showcased by Google involves the assistant's capability to recognize multiple tabs opened from the same webpage as a cohesive context group. This feature is particularly useful for tasks like price comparisons or evaluating various products before making a purchase. Initially, the Gemini sidebar was exclusive to Windows and MacOS platforms, but this update extends its accessibility to Chromebook Plus users as well. Additionally, Google is harnessing its new personal intelligence feature, which connects to services like Gmail, Search, YouTube, and Google Photos. This allows users to ask Gemini questions related to personal data, such as inquiring about family schedules or requesting assistance with drafting and sending emails without leaving the sidebar. Another innovative addition is the Nano Banana integration, which permits users to alter existing images with new ones or products discovered during their browsing journey. The most ambitious feature, however, is termed auto-browse. This functionality aims to perform tasks on behalf of users by utilizing their personal information and navigating websites autonomously. For example, users can instruct the AI to visit a specific website, purchase an item, and even search for discount coupons. Importantly, the auto-browse feature will require user intervention for sensitive actions, like logging into accounts or finalizing purchases. Google has assured that while these features will utilize Chrome’s password manager and saved payment details, their AI models will remain insulated from direct access to this sensitive information. Initially, this feature will be available to AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the U.S. Despite the promise of AI agents, their real-world performance has often been inconsistent, with issues in accurately interpreting user intent or completing tasks across various websites. Google’s demonstrations, much like those from other AI developers, focused on shopping and travel planning, but practical applications have encountered hurdles. Early tests revealed that users have successfully utilized the features for appointment scheduling, completing online forms, gathering tax documents, obtaining quotes from service providers, and managing expense reports. With Gemini sidebar support and Nano Banana integration rolling out today, the personal intelligence feature is set to launch in the coming months.
