Google turns Chrome into an AI coworker for the workplace

In an exciting development for enterprise users, Google recently unveiled plans to integrate advanced AI capabilities into Chrome during its Google Cloud Next event. This new feature, termed 'auto browse', leverages the Gemini AI to help users navigate their browser tabs more efficiently and tackle various tasks commonly associated with online work. With auto browse, users can seamlessly manage activities such as booking travel, entering data, and scheduling meetings. For instance, it can assist in populating information within a company's preferred CRM system by extracting relevant data from Google Docs, comparing vendor prices across multiple tabs, or summarizing a candidate’s qualifications ahead of an interview. Importantly, Google emphasizes the necessity of human oversight in these workflows. Users will need to review and confirm the AI's suggestions before finalizing any actions, ensuring a balance between automation and human judgment. This initiative aims to alleviate time-consuming tasks, allowing professionals to concentrate on higher-level strategic work. However, there are concerns that the introduction of AI could lead to increased workloads rather than reduced ones, raising questions about the actual impact on productivity in the workplace. Initially, this feature will be rolled out to Workspace users in the United States as part of Google's broader strategy to weave AI into its most frequently used applications. Organizations can enable these capabilities through specific policies, and Google assures that user prompts will not contribute to training its AI models, addressing growing privacy concerns in the tech industry. Beyond enhancing productivity, Google is also enhancing security measures within Chrome. The tech giant is expanding its ability to identify unauthorized AI tools through Chrome Enterprise Premium, aiding IT teams in detecting compromised browser extensions and anomalous agent activity. This proactive approach not only aims to bolster security but also to prevent the emergence of unregulated AI applications within corporate environments, reminiscent of past trends where new technologies were rapidly adopted by employees. This new feature, labeled 'Shadow IT risk detection', will provide IT departments with insight into both approved and unapproved generative AI and SaaS tools in use, alongside a 'Gemini Summary' highlighting vital updates and security recommendations. Additionally, Google has announced an expanded collaboration with Okta, focusing on enhancing security to prevent session hijacking and improve overall protections for users.
