The EU made Apple adopt new Wi-Fi standards, and now Android can support AirDrop

In a significant move towards interoperability, Google has announced an update to its Android Quick Share feature, enabling compatibility with Apple's AirDrop. This development marks another stride in improving communication between iPhone and Android users, particularly in environments where not everyone owns an iPhone. With this update, Android devices equipped with the enhanced Quick Share will now recognize Apple devices that have AirDrop set to 'everyone for 10 minutes.' These Apple devices will appear in the Quick Share device list akin to any other Android phone. However, this feature will initially be available exclusively on the Pixel 10 series, although Google has expressed its intention to broaden access to more Android devices in the future. Despite this progress, it is important to note that Quick Share will not function with Apple devices that are set to the default 'contacts only' mode. Google has indicated a willingness to collaborate with Apple to potentially enable this mode down the line, although no current partnership exists on this front. On the security aspect, Google has emphasized that, similar to AirDrop, files shared using Quick Share are transferred directly between devices without passing through the companies' servers. The use of the Rust programming language for Android's implementation has been highlighted as a key factor in ensuring secure cross-platform file sharing. Google’s VP of Platforms Security and Privacy, Dave Kleidermacher, explained that Rust's strict rules for memory management enhance security by preventing various memory-related vulnerabilities, thereby protecting users from potential exploits. This update promises to make file sharing between differing platforms more seamless, paving the way for a more integrated user experience in the future.
