Agentic app coding gets an upgrade with Google’s release of Android CLI

At the recent Google I/O annual developer conference, the tech giant unveiled significant upgrades to its Android development tools, particularly for AI agents. With the introduction of the Android CLI (command-line interface) version 1.0, developers can now harness the power of various AI agents, including Claude Code, OpenAI’s Codex, and Google's own Antigravity and Gemini. This new feature aims to streamline the app development process on Android by allowing AI agents to utilize command-line capabilities regardless of the coding platform they prefer. Google recognizes the growing trend of developers leveraging AI technologies that are not exclusively from its ecosystem and is committed to making its extensive knowledge base more widely available. The Android CLI enables AI agents to access vital information about Android development through a new command, “android studio,” which connects to the robust features of Android Studio. This access will empower agents to execute a variety of commands and utilize additional tools effectively. Moreover, Google's Antigravity platform will offer an optional bundle that integrates the Android CLI tools, facilitating core Android app development tasks seamlessly. This strategic move underscores Google's effort to empower developers and enhance the overall Android app creation experience.
