Google's AI Mode adds images as search giant tries to keep pace with rivals

In a significant update announced on Tuesday, Google is enhancing its AI Mode by incorporating visual results into its artificial intelligence-driven search experience. Initially launched in the U.S. in May as a text-focused tool that utilized natural language to answer queries, AI Mode is now set to provide users with image-based responses, ideal for inspiration and shopping assistance. This move comes as a response to the rapidly evolving landscape of generative AI, particularly following the introduction of OpenAI's ChatGPT in late 2022, which reshaped user expectations for online information retrieval. To maintain its competitive edge, Google has been seeking innovative ways to integrate AI into its search functionalities. Robby Stein, Google's vice president of product management for Search, highlighted that the new visual features will expand the potential applications of AI Mode, especially in scenarios where text alone falls short. Stein explained, "Sometimes what you're looking for really just can't be articulated with text. For example, if someone is shopping for shoes, they may prefer visual inspiration over descriptive text." Users can now enter prompts such as, "Show me a maximalist inspo for my bedroom," and receive a curated selection of images in return. They can further refine their searches by specifying preferences, like requesting options with "bolder prints and dark tones." AI Mode's capabilities also extend to shopping, where users can search for specific items, such as "Barrel jeans that aren't too baggy," and view various shoppable options. Each image provided in AI Mode is linked to the retailer's website, facilitating easy purchasing decisions. This new feature is powered by a combination of Google's AI model, Gemini 2.5, along with its Search, Lens, and Image search functionalities. Stein concluded that this enhancement represents a groundbreaking advancement in the potential of AI-driven search technologies.
