Google updates AI search to include ‘expert advice’ from Reddit and other web forums

Google is making significant updates to its search engine to enrich the AI experience by incorporating insights from web forums and discussions. This new feature aims to provide users with additional context around links, including content sourced from platforms like Reddit and other online communities. While this approach could help address more niche inquiries, it also introduces potential for confusion. Just two years ago, Google revamped its search strategy to prioritize AI, often presenting an 'AI Overview' when users conduct searches. This shift has received a mixed response from users, as the AI's inability to discern sarcasm or unreliable information has raised concerns. For instance, it previously misquoted The Onion in a humorous suggestion about diet, demonstrating the risks of sourcing from less credible platforms. Despite improvements in AI Overviews, the technology remains susceptible to inaccuracies. A recent analysis by The New York Times revealed that these AI responses are accurate about 90% of the time. However, considering Google's vast volume of queries, this means that hundreds of thousands of searches could yield incorrect information every minute. Recognizing the complexity of many search queries, Google sees the value in integrating perspectives from online discussions. The company stated, 'For many searches, people are increasingly seeking out advice from others.' The new feature will showcase a preview of insights gathered from social media and public discussions, offering users a broader range of viewpoints. Google's update raises questions about the intended purpose of the AI Overview. Is it meant to provide direct answers, or simply a collection of sources that may contain relevant information? By adding more context about the origins of the information, such as the creator's name or community affiliation, Google aims to assist users in evaluating the reliability of the content. This approach mirrors how platforms like ChatGPT and Claude reference sources to support their claims, though users are still advised to verify the accuracy of these citations.
