Google to scale up AI-powered fraud detection and security operations in India

In a significant move to tackle rising digital fraud, Google has introduced its Safety Charter in India, marking an expansion of its AI initiatives aimed at fraud detection and scam prevention. India, being Google's largest market outside the United States, has seen a dramatic increase in digital fraud, particularly related to the government's instant payment system, UPI, which reported an 85% year-over-year surge, amounting to nearly 11 billion Indian rupees (approximately $127 million). The landscape of online scams in India is complex, with fraudsters employing various tactics, including posing as officials through video calls and using predatory loan applications to extort money from unsuspecting victims. Google's Safety Charter is designed to address these challenges head-on. Additionally, the tech giant has established its fourth global security engineering center in India, following similar facilities in Dublin, Munich, and Malaga. This center, announced during the Google for India summit, aims to collaborate with local entities—including government bodies, educational institutions, and small businesses—to develop solutions for pressing issues in cybersecurity, privacy, and AI. Heather Adkins, Google's Vice President of Security Engineering, emphasized the center's focus on three critical areas: enhancing online safety against scams, securing enterprises and governmental infrastructure, and promoting responsible AI development. "Our goal is to leverage our engineering capabilities in India to design solutions that are relevant to local users," Adkins stated. In partnership with the Ministry of Home Affairs’ Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), Google is also working to raise awareness about cybercrime. This collaboration builds on the company's existing initiatives, such as the DigiKavach program launched in 2023, aimed at mitigating the effects of harmful financial applications. Globally, Google is already utilizing AI extensively to combat online scams, removing millions of fraudulent ads and accounts. In India, the company plans to enhance its AI capabilities further to combat digital fraud. For instance, Google Messages, the pre-installed messaging app on many Android phones, employs AI-driven Scam Detection technology that protects users from over 500 million suspicious messages each month. Moreover, the Play Protect feature blocked nearly 60 million attempts to install high-risk applications last year. Adkins also noted the increasing misuse of AI by malicious actors, leading to more sophisticated phishing scams. Google is committed to ensuring that its AI models are rigorously tested to understand harmful practices and to develop frameworks, such as the Secure AI Framework, to prevent misuse of its technology. Addressing the broader challenges, Adkins highlighted the threats posed by commercial surveillance vendors, who sell hacking tools that enable widespread attacks without requiring technical expertise. This issue is particularly pertinent in India, where diverse demographics present unique cybersecurity challenges. In a bid to enhance online security, Google has advocated for more secure authentication methods over traditional passwords, implementing multi-factor authentication (MFA) for all user accounts. However, the transition to passwordless security remains challenging in a market like India, where demographic and economic diversity affects user behavior. Adkins acknowledged the preference for SMS-based authentication, reflecting the practical realities of the Indian market. As Google intensifies its efforts in India, the company remains vigilant in adapting to the ever-evolving landscape of digital threats, aiming to protect users and bolster security across the region.
