Google has introduced an exciting update to its AI Mode, enabling users to engage in dynamic voice conversations with the search feature. This innovative functionality allows individuals to pose complex, multi-part inquiries and receive fluid audio responses, enhancing the way people interact with Google Search. To utilize this feature, users simply need to open the Google app and tap on the new 'Live' icon to verbally ask their questions. In response, they will hear an AI-generated answer, after which they can continue the dialogue with follow-up queries. This announcement follows the recent nationwide rollout of AI Mode across the United States, positioning Google to compete with popular platforms like Perplexity AI and OpenAI's ChatGPT. The new voice conversation capability is particularly beneficial for users on the go or multitasking. For instance, someone preparing for a trip might ask, 'What are some tips for preventing a linen dress from wrinkling in a suitcase?' They can then seamlessly follow up with, 'What should I do if it still wrinkles?' Throughout this interactive process, relevant links will appear on the screen for those interested in delving deeper into the subject. Search Live operates in the background, allowing users to maintain the conversation while using other applications. Additionally, a 'transcript' button provides access to the text of the responses, enabling users to ask questions by typing if they prefer. Users can also revisit past interactions through their AI Mode history. Liza Ma, Google's director of product management for Search, shared insights into the technology powering this feature. 'Search Live in AI Mode employs a custom iteration of Gemini, featuring advanced voice capabilities,' she stated in a blog post. 'Our tailored model leverages Search’s top-tier quality and information systems, ensuring that users receive reliable and useful answers, regardless of how they pose their questions.' Moreover, Google is planning to expand the Live capabilities in AI Mode further, including a feature that allows users to ask questions based on real-time visuals captured by their phone’s camera, a functionality previewed at Google I/O in May.
