Google now lets you add friends as contacts for account recovery

In a significant move to bolster user privacy and security, Google has unveiled a suite of new tools designed to enhance recovery options for users across its Android ecosystem. These updates aim to combat the rampant issue of spam while ensuring seamless account recovery in the event of device loss or account compromise. One of the standout features introduced is the ability to designate Recovery Contacts. Users can now add trusted friends or family members who can assist in account recovery by verifying their identity. If someone finds themselves locked out due to a lost device or forgotten password, they can select one of these contacts to receive a temporary verification code, valid for 15 minutes. Each account can feature up to ten recovery contacts, who must approve the addition to the list. Moreover, once a contact is added, they cannot be reused for recovery for a period of seven days. Additionally, Google is implementing a mobile number sign-in option, which will streamline the recovery process, especially for users who have lost their devices. This feature will automatically detect all accounts linked to a specific phone number, allowing users to use their previous lock-screen passcode or pattern for verification. These enhancements are part of a broader rollout that includes improved spam detection in Google Messages. This feature will alert users about suspicious links, preventing them from inadvertently visiting potentially harmful sites. Notably, a key verifier tool is also being introduced to ensure end-to-end encryption in messages, safeguarding user privacy. To further educate users on recognizing and avoiding scams, Google is launching a new interactive game titled "Be Scam Ready." This initiative aims to inform users about various fraud scenarios and enhance their awareness of online security. These updates are gradually being made available worldwide, reflecting Google's ongoing commitment to user safety and privacy in an increasingly digital landscape.
