Google engineers turn to Anthropic’s Claude Code amid internal challenges: What you should know

Amid growing concerns about its position in the AI coding landscape, Google engineers are increasingly turning to Anthropic's Claude Code tools. Reports indicate that employees within Google's AI division, DeepMind, fear that the company is falling behind in the development of effective AI coding tools. According to insights from current and former employees, various teams have begun adopting AI solutions that can autonomously create products through simple chatbot prompts. However, Google lacks a cohesive strategy to capitalize on this emerging trend. Employees have noted that the company’s approach to its Gemini project is fragmented, with multiple tools operating under different names. This lack of clarity is causing confusion and hindering productivity. In light of these challenges, many engineers are exploring alternative tools like Claude, citing concerns that Google's own models do not match the capabilities of their competitors in coding tasks. There are reports that members of the DeepMind team have been granted access to Claude, despite an internal policy against using external tools. In response to these setbacks, Google is taking steps to consolidate its coding initiatives. Chief AI Architect Koray Kavukcuoglu is leading efforts to unify various coding tools to enhance operational efficiency and accelerate innovation. This initiative is being developed in collaboration with Google's core engineering team, focusing on creating a streamlined system centered around a platform known as Antigravity. Additionally, DeepMind is reportedly allocating more resources to bolster its AI coding capabilities by forming a new team under the leadership of Sebastian Borgeaud. Another key figure, John Jumper, is also contributing to AI coding projects aimed at expediting adoption. A Google spokesperson expressed confidence in the company’s internal coding tools, stating, "We’ve seen tremendous adoption of our internal coding tools such as Antigravity and others since introducing them over recent years, and their use has been turbocharging our model and AI tooling development."
