Hundreds of Googlers ask their CEO to block classified AI work with the Pentagon

Approximately 600 employees from Google have voiced their concerns in a letter addressed to CEO Sundar Pichai, urging the company to refrain from allowing its artificial intelligence technologies to be utilized by the U.S. military for classified operations. This letter, which includes signatures from individuals in Google's DeepMind and Cloud divisions, references a recent report indicating that discussions were underway between Google and the Pentagon regarding the deployment of the Gemini AI system in classified scenarios. The employees emphasized their deep understanding of AI's potential risks, stating, "As people working on AI, we know that these systems can centralize power and that they do make mistakes. We feel that our proximity to this technology creates a responsibility to highlight and prevent its most unethical and dangerous uses." They argued that the best way to ensure the company does not become entangled in harmful applications is to reject any classified projects outright. Google has yet to provide a comment regarding the letter, as noted by Jane Chung, the founder of Justice Speaks, a communications firm that represents the concerned employees. The call for action comes amidst a backdrop of internal opposition at Google related to military contracts. In 2018, the company opted not to renew its Project Maven contract with the Department of Defense, a decision made after significant employee protests. Subsequently, the contract was acquired by Palantir. In the wake of that decision, Google established a set of AI principles aimed at prioritizing ethical standards, which included commitments against using AI for military purposes. However, these principles faced scrutiny last year when the company revised them, removing explicit language regarding weapons and surveillance. Despite these developments, Google has continued to secure contracts with the Pentagon, including agreements for providing AI solutions in non-classified contexts. During a meeting earlier this year, Google DeepMind employees were informed to anticipate similar contracts in the future. The letter concludes with workers expressing their desire for AI to serve humanity positively, rather than being employed for harmful or inhumane purposes, which they believe could include lethal autonomous weapons and extensive surveillance operations.
