Google confirms it will sign the EU AI Code of Practice

In a significant shift, Google has announced its intention to sign the European Union's AI Code of Practice, a framework the tech giant initially criticized as overly restrictive. This decision comes at a time when many companies in the tech sector are wary of regulatory measures that demand compliance with copyright laws and transparency regarding data used for training AI models. Kent Walker, Google's head of global affairs, expressed that while the company is committed to the code, there are concerns that its implementation could hinder innovation. He emphasized the importance of a balanced approach to regulation, stating that overly stringent measures might stifle the very advancements the code aims to support. Despite its initial resistance, Google now believes that its contributions to the European Commission have been positively received. The company argues that a robust legal framework can facilitate access to high-quality AI tools in Europe, potentially boosting the economy by 8 percent, or approximately 1.8 trillion euros, by 2034. This projection serves as a strategic incentive for European businesses to align with Google's vision for the Code of Practice. While Google prepares to sign the agreement, it is keen to influence the execution of the code to ensure that it does not impose excessive restrictions on innovation, particularly regarding copyright regulations and the disclosure of proprietary information. This approach contrasts sharply with Meta's stance, as the company has firmly rejected the code, asserting that it could limit the development of advanced AI models crucial for its ambitious projects. Meanwhile, Microsoft is still evaluating its options regarding the agreement, while OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, has indicated its willingness to sign the code. As the landscape of AI regulation continues to evolve, Google's decision to participate highlights its desire to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of AI in Europe.
