Google makes Gemini ‘proactive and powerful’ with Personal Intelligence

Google has enhanced its Gemini AI chatbot by integrating personal intelligence, aiming to deliver a more individualized, proactive, and powerful user experience. Currently in beta, this feature is being introduced in the United States, enabling Gemini to integrate seamlessly with Google applications such as Gmail and Google Photos, thus offering a more tailored interaction. Josh Woodward, VP of Google Labs, elaborated on this new functionality in a recent blog post. He stated, "Personal Intelligence securely connects information from apps like Gmail and Google Photos to make Gemini uniquely helpful. Users have the autonomy to choose which apps to link, ensuring a supercharged experience. With just a single tap, it integrates Gmail, Photos, YouTube, and Search, all while maintaining simplicity and security." According to Google, the core capabilities of Personal Intelligence lie in its ability to reason through complex sources and retrieve precise details from emails or images to respond to user inquiries. This feature works by merging these competencies across text, photos, and videos, resulting in personalized answers. The tech giant claims that this tool is particularly useful for obtaining recommendations on books, shows, clothing, and travel destinations. Woodward shared a personal anecdote, explaining how he organized his family’s upcoming spring break using Gemini. The AI analyzed their interests and previous trips from Gmail and Photos, helping him avoid tourist traps and suggesting an overnight train along with board games suited for the family. By default, the feature to connect apps via Personal Intelligence is disabled, but users can enable it at their discretion and can deactivate it at any time. Once activated, Gemini accesses user data to fulfill specific requests. Google assures that since this data is securely stored within its ecosystem, there’s no need to send sensitive information elsewhere for personalization. Additionally, Gemini is designed to reference or clarify the information it utilizes from connected sources, allowing users to verify the data. An example highlighted by Google involved a user needing new tires for their 2019 Honda minivan. While at the shop, they inquired about the tire size, and Gemini not only provided the specifications but also suggested various options based on the family’s previous road trips documented in Google Photos. It even retrieved the license plate number from a picture, showcasing its practical utility in everyday situations.
