
On Wednesday, Google unveiled an array of advanced Gemini AI features set to enhance its Chrome browser, marking a significant move in the tech giant's strategy to spotlight its cutting-edge technologies for users. Among the new tools is the innovative image generation feature known as Nano Banana, alongside the 'Personal Intelligence' capability and an 'Auto browse' function that empowers users to command the browser to execute various online tasks with just one prompt. To further enrich user experience, Google has introduced a refreshed design for Chrome, which includes a dedicated panel on the right side of the browser. This panel keeps the Gemini chatbot readily accessible as users navigate the web. These latest updates reflect Google's commitment to infusing its browser with AI capabilities, especially as it faces stiff competition from OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, and Anthropic, the developer behind Claude. The newly integrated features aim to personalize the browsing experience. Earlier this month, Google rolled out the 'Personal Intelligence' feature within the Gemini app, which harmonizes information from various applications such as Gmail and Google Photos to deliver personalized responses through the Gemini chatbot. Parisa Tabriz, Chrome's vice president, noted in a blog post that Chrome will retain context from prior interactions, enabling users to receive uniquely tailored answers to their inquiries. These enhancements align with the vision of Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis, who has articulated the goal of creating a 'universal assistant'—a helper capable of planning and executing tasks on users' behalf across devices. Starting Wednesday, AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the U.S. will gain access to the Auto browse feature, designed to allow users to direct the Gemini chatbot to complete tasks like ordering groceries or researching hotels and flights over various date options. As an example, users can instruct Auto browse to "Review my saved apartments on Redfin and eliminate any that aren't pet-friendly," as highlighted in the company’s blog. Google has been significantly expanding AI functionalities within Chrome since a U.S. district judge ruled in September against compelling the company to divest Chrome due to its illegal monopoly in the search market. Following this ruling, Google filed for an appeal regarding the monopoly finding. In response to the recent ruling and the competitive landscape, Google updated Chrome in September to incorporate additional AI features that integrate seamlessly with services such as Calendar, YouTube, and Maps, allowing users to access these tools without switching to different web pages. Meanwhile, OpenAI launched its own browser, Atlas, in October, centered around ChatGPT, which caused a slight dip in Google parent Alphabet's shares by 2%.
