Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind, has issued a grave warning about the imminent arrival of artificial general intelligence (AGI), emphasizing that humanity is running out of time to prepare. In a thought-provoking essay shared on X, titled "A Framework for Frontier AI and the Dawning of a New Age," he underscored the necessity for immediate action to navigate the potential risks associated with advanced AI systems. Hassabis described this moment as a critical juncture in human history, asserting that AGI could be just a few years away. "We must approach this period of development with caution and foresight," he stated, stressing the importance of addressing the risks that may surface as we advance closer to AGI. In his essay, Hassabis pointed to the growing anxiety surrounding frontier AI models, particularly their potential to facilitate cyberattacks. He noted that these powerful systems could assist hackers in crafting malicious code, pinpointing software vulnerabilities, or streamlining phishing operations. Moreover, he raised alarms about the nuclear and biological threats that could emerge as AI capabilities continue to evolve. To mitigate these dangers, Hassabis called for increased preparedness and stringent control measures. He urged governments to implement robust safety regulations and technical safeguards to ensure the secure deployment of powerful AI. He proposed the establishment of a US-led coalition of experts dedicated to testing frontier AI models and assessing their safety standards before public release. This initiative reflects his endorsement of recent governmental actions regarding AI model releases by companies like OpenAI and Anthropic. Hassabis emphasized that the rapid advancements in AI necessitate a new, flexible, and thorough approach to evaluating the capabilities of these models. He believes that the US, with its economic and technical prowess, is ideally positioned to pioneer such a framework. He suggested that this coalition should operate as an independent, nonprofit organization, akin to the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) in the financial sector, and could be funded by AI companies themselves. Several prominent tech leaders, including Sundar Pichai of Google and Sam Altman of OpenAI, have expressed their support for this vision.
