Google's DeepMind, renowned for its advancements in artificial intelligence, has recently acquired a minority stake in the developer behind the acclaimed sci-fi simulation game, EVE Online. This collaboration aims to leverage the game as a testing ground to explore 'intelligence in complex, dynamic, player-driven systems.' This partnership emerges as CCP Games, the developer of EVE Online, has announced a significant investment of $120 million to buy back its independence from its previous owner, South Korean publisher Pearl Abyss. The company will now operate under the new name, Fenris Creations, and assures players that there will be no restructuring or layoffs as it continues its operations. In their joint announcement, Fenris and DeepMind highlighted EVE Online as an exceptional environment for conducting research, particularly in the development of AI systems that incorporate long-term planning, memory usage, and continual learning. DeepMind plans to carry out controlled experiments using a specially designed offline version of the game on a local server, ensuring that the gameplay experience for online users remains unaffected. Furthermore, both companies intend to investigate new gameplay experiences that can be unlocked through these advanced technologies. DeepMind has a rich history of utilizing games as platforms for testing machine learning models, having achieved significant breakthroughs in complex board games like Go, as well as in popular video games such as StarCraft and various Atari titles. More recently, the organization has been focusing on 'virtual world' models to help AI systems learn to navigate real-world environments. Hilmar Veigar Pétursson, CEO of Fenris Creations, expressed his enthusiasm in an open letter to the game's community, stating that EVE Online is one of the few environments where fundamental questions about intelligence can be examined in a setting that mimics a living world. This research will enable Google DeepMind's models to tackle challenging issues, long-term scenarios, and unexpected possibilities. Alexandre Moufarek, Director at Google DeepMind, also shared his excitement, noting, 'What the EVE community has created is truly unparalleled in gaming. It serves as a unique simulation for testing general-purpose artificial intelligence in a secure environment. I’m thrilled to partner with the team at Fenris Creations to advance the boundaries of AI and explore new player experiences.'
