Google DeepMind bets $75M on AI’s future in Hollywood with A24 deal

This investment, reported by the Wall Street Journal, aims to revolutionize the filmmaking process through the development of advanced AI tools. A24, celebrated for its acclaimed films such as 'Everything Everywhere All At Once' and 'Marty Supreme,' is poised to leverage this partnership to enhance creative storytelling. Google DeepMind intends to work closely with talented artists, gathering insights and feedback to tailor these AI innovations to the unique needs of filmmakers. Demis Hassabis, the co-founder and CEO of Google DeepMind, emphasized the importance of collaboration in this venture. He stated, “We believe the best way to develop tools that empower artists is to work directly with them. By collaborating from the start with industry leaders like A24, we can create AI features that support authentic and meaningful storytelling.” The move comes amid ongoing discussions in Hollywood regarding the role of AI in film production. While some studios have faced backlash over AI's involvement in creative processes, A24 is not alone in exploring this technology. Earlier this year, Netflix announced its acquisition of Ben Affleck’s InterPositive, a company dedicated to creating AI solutions for filmmakers. Additionally, Amazon's MGM Studios launched its own AI division last year, focused on enhancing tools for television and film production.
