Google reportedly snags up team behind AI voice startup Hume AI

In a notable move within the AI landscape, Google DeepMind has acquired the talent behind Hume AI, a voice technology startup, as part of a licensing agreement. This strategic decision sees Hume AI's CEO, Alan Cowen, along with several key engineers, joining the ranks of DeepMind to enhance the voice features of the Gemini project. Despite the acquisition, Hume AI will continue to provide its innovative technology to other companies in the AI sector. While specific financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed, reports indicate that this trend of acquiring startup teams rather than companies outright is becoming increasingly common among leading AI firms. This approach allows them to expand their capabilities while navigating around regulatory scrutiny. The acquisition follows a similar pattern, as Google previously brought in top talent from the viral AI coding startup Windsurf, and OpenAI has been actively acquiring teams from various startups, including Covogo and Roi. As the Federal Trade Commission examines these types of deals more closely, the focus shifts to the growing importance of voice technology in AI applications. Hume AI has made a name for itself with its innovative Empathetic Voice Interface, which allows conversational AI to interpret users' emotions through their vocal tone. To date, the startup has raised nearly $80 million and is projected to generate $100 million in revenue this year. Google is not alone in the voice technology race. The tech giant has been enhancing its Gemini Live feature, enabling users to engage in more complex conversations with chatbots. Furthermore, other industry players are investing heavily in voice capabilities. OpenAI is reportedly revamping its audio models in anticipation of launching an audio-first personal device, and Meta has accelerated its own voice technology initiatives through acquisitions like Play AI. As the demand for voice interaction continues to grow, experts emphasize that voice input will be critical for wearable technology. Investor Vanessa Larco articulated this sentiment, stating that the acquisition of Hume AI will only heighten the urgency for developing voice-based applications. Recent developments indicate a booming market for voice technology, with AI voice generation startup ElevenLabs recently announcing an annual recurring revenue of $330 million.
