Google DeepMind started moving faster by acting like a startup, Demis Hassabis says

In a recent episode of the "20VC" podcast, Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind, revealed how a strategic reorganization has propelled the AI lab to new heights, enabling it to catch up with competitors over the past few years. Hassabis emphasized that Google has harnessed its extensive resources, particularly addressing the critical bottleneck of computational power that often hampers AI research. "We've effectively unified talent from across the company, directing our efforts toward a common goal," Hassabis explained. This approach has allowed Google to develop some of the most significant AI models, avoiding the fragmentation of having multiple versions within the same organization. He described the process as a relentless pursuit of innovation, with the lab operating almost like a startup to regain its leading position in the field. Founded by Hassabis in 2010 and acquired by Google in 2014, DeepMind merged with Google Brain in 2023 to create a powerhouse known for groundbreaking tools like Gemini and Nano Banana. Hassabis noted that approximately 90% of the fundamental advancements that have shaped the current AI landscape can be traced back to contributions from Google Brain, Google Research, or DeepMind itself. The unit now finds itself in competition with other pioneering labs such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and Microsoft AI. This culture of agility and innovation is not unique to DeepMind. Many tech giants, including Amazon, are striving to maintain a startup-like environment. Last year, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy expressed his desire for the company to function like the "world's biggest startup," highlighting that speed is crucial across all sectors. Similarly, Apple co-founder Steve Jobs previously stated that the company was structured like a startup, with various teams collaborating towards shared objectives. DeepMind's evolution showcases the importance of adaptability and collaboration in the fast-paced world of artificial intelligence, pushing boundaries and striving for excellence in a competitive landscape.
