Google has dropped more than 50 DEI-related organizations from its funding list

In a significant shift, Google has removed more than 50 organizations focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) from its funding roster, according to a recent report by the Tech Transparency Project (TTP). This decision is part of a larger purge, with a total of 214 groups being dropped while 101 new entities were added to the list. The TTP's findings reveal that the majority of the removed organizations were DEI-related, totaling 58. These groups often included terms in their mission statements such as "diversity," "equity," "inclusion," and "activism," reflecting a trend influenced by directives from former Trump administration officials who suggested limiting such terminology within federal agencies. In response to these changes, Google spokesperson José Castañeda clarified that the adjusted list pertains to contributions made in 2024 and does not encompass all funding activities across the company. He emphasized that Google supports a wide array of groups advocating for pro-innovation policies, noting that the selection of these groups varies annually based on where their contributions can make the most impact. Among the notable organizations removed from Google's funding list are the African American Community Service Agency, dedicated to empowering Black and historically excluded communities, and the Latino Leadership Alliance, which focuses on racial equity for Latinos. The funding cuts come as Google reassesses its DEI commitments, a move influenced by cost-cutting measures and evolving political pressures against DEI initiatives. The recent changes reflect a broader backlash against DEI programs, particularly following the U.S. Supreme Court's 2023 ruling that ended affirmative action at colleges. This decision has intensified scrutiny of DEI efforts in conservative circles, with former President Trump implementing policies aimed at dismantling governmental DEI programs shortly after taking office. Despite the contentious atmosphere surrounding DEI, many companies are adapting their approaches by rebranding their initiatives with less provocative language, such as "learning" and "hiring." Google CEO Sundar Pichai reaffirmed in a recent all-hands meeting that diversity remains essential for the company, stating, "We're a global company, we have users around the world, and we think the best way to serve them well is by having a workforce that represents that diversity." Interestingly, one of the groups cut from the funding list is the National Network to End Domestic Violence, which has a long-standing partnership with Google. Despite its removal from the public contributions list, Google confirmed it allocated $75,000 to this organization in 2024, although the reasons for its removal from the public listing were not disclosed.
