Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian: ‘AI helps workers do more, not take jobs’

In a recent interview, Thomas Kurian, the CEO of Google Cloud, addressed growing worries about artificial intelligence (AI) potentially causing job losses in the tech industry. He strongly emphasized that AI is intended to enhance human productivity rather than replace workers. Kurian shared insights in an interview with Big Technology, published on October 9. He highlighted that AI's primary function is to expand employees' capabilities, not reduce workforce numbers. He pointed to Google’s Customer Engagement Suite—a set of AI-driven customer service tools introduced last year—as an example. Despite initial fears from clients about AI taking over jobs, Kurian stated that 'almost none of our clients have let anyone go,' as the technology has mainly addressed tasks that were previously overlooked, like managing minor customer inquiries. Further supporting this perspective, Google CEO Sundar Pichai noted during a June podcast that AI has enhanced productivity for engineers by approximately 10%. This increase is measured by the additional engineering hours made possible with AI support. Rather than downsizing, Pichai mentioned that Google plans to increase its engineering staff in the upcoming year, illustrating that AI is expanding the opportunities available to the company. The impact of AI on software development is becoming increasingly evident. Pichai mentioned that over 30% of new code at Google is generated by AI, a rise from 25% just a year prior. Similarly, Microsoft UK’s CEO Darren Hardman revealed that GitHub Copilot is responsible for producing 40% of the code at Microsoft, allowing the company to launch more products in a single year than it had in the previous three years combined. Kurian's remarks serve as a reassuring message for tech professionals: AI is a tool designed to amplify human abilities rather than pose a threat to employment.
