In a move reflecting the ongoing wave of layoffs in the tech industry, Google has reportedly made job cuts within its Cloud division, particularly affecting its cybersecurity teams. Sources indicate that the Google Threat Intelligence Group (GTIG) and the Mandiant team have experienced workforce reductions over the past two weeks. Employees have begun to share their experiences on LinkedIn following the layoffs. One such individual, Andrew Kopcienski, a Principal Intelligence Analyst, expressed his disappointment online, stating, "I was laid off last night, alongside a lot of other great folks at Google Threat Intelligence Group." However, Google has not officially acknowledged the number of positions eliminated, leaving the total workforce impact unclear. The Google Threat Intelligence Group is well-regarded for its work on investigating cyber threats, including attacks from hackers and nation-states. Their reports and research are frequently utilized by governments, corporations, and cybersecurity professionals aiming to bolster their defenses. Mandiant, a cybersecurity firm acquired by Google in 2022, also saw job losses among its personnel, contributing to the broader trend of layoffs within the Google Cloud division. A spokesperson for Google commented on the situation, saying, "We regularly evaluate our internal structures to ensure we are best positioned to meet the evolving demands of our customers and the industry." This year has proven to be particularly tough for tech employees worldwide, as companies grapple with cost pressures and the need for restructuring, sometimes driven by advancements in Artificial Intelligence. In a similar vein, Meta recently cut 8,000 jobs globally, while also reallocating over 7,000 employees to focus on AI initiatives. According to layoff tracking sources, as of early June, over 116,000 tech workers have been laid off from 164 different companies, with Uber and GitLab also announcing staff reductions in recent weeks.
