How AI startups are fueling Google’s booming cloud business

In a significant move, Google Cloud has welcomed two burgeoning AI coding startups, Lovable and Windsurf, into its customer fold. This development underscores Google Cloud's aspirations to enhance its market presence amid competition from giants like AWS and Microsoft Azure. The partnerships signal a strategic direction for Google, as it seeks to position its cloud services as a cornerstone of the company's future. Despite being overshadowed by its larger rivals and its own dominant advertising sector, Google Cloud is experiencing notable growth. It has emerged as one of the fastest-growing divisions, boasting an impressive annual run rate of $50 billion. Recently, Google Cloud's head, Thomas Kurian, announced expectations of securing $58 billion in new revenue over the next two years. In 2024 alone, Google Cloud generated $43.2 billion, following $33.1 billion in 2023. A significant factor in this growth trajectory is winning contracts with top AI startups. Currently, Google Cloud collaborates with nine out of the ten leading AI labs, which includes notable names like Safe Superintelligence and OpenAI, as well as 60% of the world’s generative AI startups. Over the past year, there has been a 20% surge in AI startups opting for Google Cloud. While Lovable and Windsurf—recently acquired by Cognition—may not spend as much as larger entities, Google views these partnerships as long-term investments that could yield substantial returns as these startups scale. Both companies leverage Google Cloud infrastructure along with Gemini 2.5 Pro to enhance their offerings, with Windsurf also integrating Gemini models into Cognition’s AI agent, Devin. The rising costs associated with training and operating AI models have posed challenges for developers, including those at Google DeepMind. Yet, this scenario has proven beneficial for cloud service providers. The global cloud market is projected to surpass $400 billion by 2025, with an annual growth rate of 20% over the next five years, as reported by Synergy Research. On Thursday, Google hosted its inaugural AI Builder's Forum, bringing together hundreds of AI startup founders and announcing over 40 new AI startups building on Google Cloud. This roster includes Lovable and Windsurf, both of which are recognized as unicorns in the vibe coding niche, alongside other notable entrants like the Sequoia-backed Factory AI and Andreessen Horowitz-backed Krea AI. A key reason behind the collaboration of numerous AI startups with Google Cloud is the attractive deals offered, including $350,000 in cloud credits through the Google for Startups Cloud Program. Furthermore, Google Cloud provides a dedicated cluster of Nvidia GPUs for participants in the Y Combinator accelerator program, enhancing its appeal to emerging tech companies.
