Google Cloud's CEO says he doesn't buy into the hype that AI is going to automate everyone's jobs

In a recent conversation with the tech newsletter Big Technology, Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud, expressed skepticism about the notion that artificial intelligence could lead to widespread job losses. He emphasized that AI's primary function is not to replace human workers but to enhance their capabilities and help them achieve their professional aspirations. Kurian elaborated on the misconception that AI tools, like those in Google’s Customer Engagement Suite, could render customer service agents obsolete. He recalled that when these AI-driven features were first introduced, many clients feared they might not need human agents anymore. However, he pointed out that most clients have not reduced their workforce, instead using AI to streamline operations and improve service efficiency. This suite allows customers to receive answers to inquiries without the need for direct interaction with a representative, thus enhancing overall customer experience. As a self-educated immigrant from India, Kurian’s journey in the tech industry began with consulting at McKinsey & Company, followed by a significant tenure at Oracle before his current role at Google. He also has a twin brother, George, who leads the data infrastructure firm NetApp, further highlighting the family's influence in Silicon Valley. Kurian's perspective aligns with that of Google CEO Sundar Pichai, who recently noted a 10% productivity increase among engineers, attributing this boost to AI's role as an enabler rather than a replacer. Pichai anticipates future hiring, stating that the expansion of opportunities through AI will allow engineers to focus on more creative and rewarding tasks, rather than mundane responsibilities.
