Google Chrome expands autofill to include passports, driver’s licenses and vehicle details

In a significant enhancement, Google has rolled out an update to its Chrome browser that allows users to autofill sensitive personal information, including passport numbers, driver’s license details, and vehicle registration data. This new functionality expands upon Chrome's existing autofill capabilities, which already manage addresses, passwords, and payment information. For desktop users utilizing the enhanced autofill feature, Chrome will now automatically populate fields for important documents such as passports, driving licenses, vehicle identification numbers (VINs), and license plates when prompted on various websites. Google emphasizes that the browser's improved form recognition will enhance its ability to interpret complex forms and diverse formatting standards, leading to increased accuracy in autofill responses across different web pages. Importantly, Google reassures users that personal information will only be saved and utilized with explicit consent, and all stored data will be encrypted for security. Before any autofill action is executed, users will receive a prompt to confirm their choices, ensuring their privacy remains protected. This update is now being rolled out globally across all languages, with Google hinting at the addition of more data types in the months to come. This enhancement is part of a broader strategy by Google to upgrade Chrome in response to the rise of AI-driven browsers. Recently, the company expanded access to its Gemini feature for all Mac and Windows desktop users in the U.S. after initially restricting it to select subscribers. Future plans for Chrome include integrating agentic AI features, adding an AI-powered search mode to the address bar, and introducing tools aimed at scam detection, automatic password resets, and better account switching. Recent smaller updates have also improved user experience by automatically disabling notifications from inactive websites and simplifying the process of toggling between personal and work Google accounts.
