As browser wars heat up, Chrome adds new productivity features

In the ever-evolving landscape of web browsers, Google Chrome is stepping up its game with an array of fresh features aimed at boosting productivity. On Thursday, the tech giant unveiled the official launch of three significant updates: Split View, PDF annotations, and a new option to save files directly to Google Drive. These enhancements come as Google faces increasing competition from AI-driven companies like OpenAI and Perplexity, which are exploring innovative browser functionalities. While not directly tied to AI, these new features reflect Google’s commitment to adapting and responding to the shifting dynamics of the browser market. The Split View feature allows users to seamlessly multitask by displaying two web pages side-by-side within the same tab. This functionality is perfect for taking notes while watching a video or conducting research across two sites. Users can activate Split View by dragging a tab to the browser's edge or right-clicking a link to open it in this mode. Exiting the layout is straightforward, done through a simple right-click option. Additionally, the newly introduced PDF annotations feature empowers users to interact with PDF documents directly from their browser. Users can now highlight text or add notes without needing to download the file and open it in another application. This capability streamlines essential tasks such as digitally signing documents and filling out forms. Furthermore, the Save to Google Drive feature enables users to save PDFs straight to their Google Drive accounts instead of cluttering their local storage. Files saved using this feature will be organized in a dedicated “Saved from Chrome” folder, making them easily accessible. This release follows last month’s expansion of the Gemini AI and other features for Chromebook users, and soon, Chrome will also introduce support for vertical tabs—a popular feature among competitors. Tech-savvy users can currently enable this option in an experimental phase, allowing for a more organized tab management experience. With these updates, Google aims to provide compelling reasons for users to stay loyal to Chrome, as the browser landscape continues to heat up.
