Google is set to enhance the browsing experience with a significant update to its Chrome web browser. The tech giant announced a new feature that will automatically disable notifications from websites that users haven't interacted with recently. This move aims to minimize the disruptive alerts that clutter the browsing experience, particularly for sites that users may have lost interest in. The feature will be available on both Android and desktop versions of Chrome, building on the existing Safety Check functionality that already restricts permissions for camera and location access on rarely visited sites. Acknowledging the overwhelming number of notifications users receive, Google revealed that less than 1% of these notifications typically garner any response. This data has led the company to rethink its approach to notifications, recognizing that many are simply ignored. While some notifications can provide value, Google will only revoke permissions for less-engaging websites, leaving notifications from installed web applications intact. This change could prompt websites that send excessive notifications to reconsider their strategies, aiming for a more balanced approach to user engagement. Unwanted notifications have been a long-standing frustration for users across various platforms. Apple, for instance, introduced new controls on the iPhone, allowing users to mute or summarize push notifications after widespread complaints. As part of this update, Google will notify users when it removes notification permissions, giving them the chance to revert the changes if desired. Additionally, users have the option to disable the auto-revocation feature altogether. Preliminary testing indicates that these changes won't significantly alter the total click rates on notifications, reinforcing the notion that many users have not been actively engaging with these alerts.
