After years of holding out, Google Chrome is set to introduce vertical tabs, a feature that has gained traction with the Arc browser and other modern browsers. Announced on Tuesday, this new option allows users to position their tabs alongside the browser, making it simpler to view full page titles and manage tab groups effectively. Once activated, vertical tabs will be the default setting until users decide to revert to the traditional layout. This significant update comes alongside a revamped Reading Mode, designed to offer a distraction-free environment that emphasizes text content. These additions reflect how the intensifying competition from innovative browsers has shaped Chrome's evolution, potentially diminishing the allure of rivals that seek to stand out with unique features. To enable vertical tabs, users can simply right-click within the Chrome window and select "Show Tabs Vertically." There is no strict limit to the number of tabs that can be opened, aside from what the user’s hardware can manage. Vertical tabs function similarly to the horizontal layout, allowing for multiple Chrome windows, each with its own set of tabs or groups. This update is particularly beneficial for power users and researchers who often juggle numerous tabs, as it alleviates the frustration of locating the right one, especially when multiple tabs from the same website are open. Interestingly, Google has previously explored side tabs but never fully implemented the feature until now. Recent developments have allowed users to activate this option through a flag in newer Chrome builds. The push for vertical tabs likely stems from the rising interest in alternative web browsers like Arc, which are vying for Chrome's user base. In the past few months, Chrome has been actively rolling out various updates, including Gemini AI integration, enhancements to the autofill feature, and the introduction of a Split View mode, all while announcing a quicker release schedule. As this feature gradually becomes available to users worldwide, Chrome is also launching an improved Reading Mode, which aims to provide a clean, full-page interface that reduces on-screen distractions. This update arrives at a crucial time when many websites, especially in the news sector, are cluttered with advertisements and subscription prompts, further complicated by the shifting dynamics of web traffic driven by AI advancements.
