Android phones are getting more anti-theft features

In a bid to enhance the security of its mobile devices, Google unveiled an upgraded suite of anti-theft features for Android on Tuesday. This initiative aims to reduce the risk of Android phones being targeted by thieves, especially high-end models such as the Google Pixel Pro and premium devices from brands like Samsung. The latest updates build on existing security measures introduced earlier this year, including Theft Detection Lock and Offline Device Lock. Among the new enhancements are improved authentication protocols and advanced recovery tools, allowing users to feel more secure in their device ownership. One significant upgrade is the increased user control over the Failed Authentication Lock feature, which locks the device after a set number of unsuccessful login attempts. Now, users running Android 16 or later can easily toggle this feature on or off in their settings. Additionally, the system will now enforce longer lockout periods after repeated failed attempts, making it more challenging for thieves attempting to guess a device owner's PIN or password. Moreover, last year's Identity Check feature, which safeguards applications that utilize biometric data, has been expanded to encompass all features and apps that require such authentication, providing an extra layer of security for sensitive applications like banking. For those who misplace their devices, the Remote Lock functionality has also received an upgrade. This allows users to lock their lost or stolen phones via a web browser, now enhanced with an optional security question to ensure that only the legitimate owner can access this feature. This improvement is available for devices running Android 10 and above. In Brazil, users will benefit from two theft protection features being activated by default. The Theft Detection Lock employs on-device AI to detect movements that may indicate a theft, while the Remote Lock feature will be automatically enabled, accessible through the android.com/lock website. These measures highlight Google's commitment to improving device security, making Android a more formidable opponent against theft.
