Google hires Indian-origin Windsurf CEO Varun Mohan to boost Gemini’s AI coding ambitions

In a strategic enhancement of its artificial intelligence capabilities, Google has recruited Varun Mohan, the Indian-born co-founder and CEO of the AI coding startup Windsurf. This move aims to elevate the coding automation features of Google's Gemini platform. Demis Hassabis, the co-founder and CEO of Google DeepMind, shared the news on Saturday via X, expressing his excitement for the new collaboration. "Thrilled to welcome @windsurf_ai founders Varun Mohan and Douglas Chen and some of the brilliant Windsurf eng team to @GoogleDeepMind," he stated. Hassabis emphasized the potential of working with the Windsurf team to accelerate Gemini's initiatives in coding agents and tool utilization. This partnership forms part of a broader $2.4 billion licensing agreement, which grants Google non-exclusive rights to Windsurf's intellectual property. Importantly, this is not an acquisition; Windsurf will continue to operate independently, maintaining its right to license its technology to other entities. Windsurf has made a name for itself with its innovative approach to AI-assisted software development, known as "vibe coding," which focuses on creating a collaborative coding experience rather than simple predictive completions. Along with Varun Mohan, Douglas Chen and other key engineers from Windsurf will transition to Google DeepMind, where they will work on developing what is referred to as "agentic coding," a concept aimed at allowing AI models to function more like intelligent co-developers. The recruitment of Windsurf's team is a significant setback for OpenAI, which had been in exclusive negotiations to acquire the startup earlier this year, valuing it at around $3 billion. OpenAI has indicated that the exclusivity period for the talks has now lapsed. This latest addition to Google's roster amplifies the fierce competition among leading AI firms striving to dominate the realm of developer tools. Microsoft, a supporter of OpenAI, has already integrated AI extensively into its software offerings, with CEO Satya Nadella revealing that nearly 30% of Microsoft's code is now AI-generated. In parallel, Meta has appointed Alexandr Wang, founder of Scale AI, to spearhead its AI strategy under a $14.3 billion initiative. Jeff Wang, the interim CEO of Windsurf, remarked that the startup will continue to develop its enterprise product as its core team transitions to Google. "We’re excited about what lies ahead and proud that our team will help shape the next wave of AI-assisted development," he noted on X.
