In a significant move, Google announced on Wednesday its intention to endorse the European Union's guidelines on artificial intelligence, diverging from Meta's recent rejection of the same. Meta had expressed concerns that these guidelines could hinder innovation in the AI sector. In a blog update, Google articulated its belief that adopting these guidelines would enhance access to cutting-edge AI tools for European citizens. The company highlighted the potential economic benefits, suggesting that the integration of AI could contribute an impressive 1.4 trillion euros (approximately $1.62 trillion) to Europe's economy by 2034. Kent Walker, Google's president of global affairs, emphasized the urgency of deploying AI technologies swiftly. The European Commission, the EU's executive arm, has released the final version of its code of practice for general-purpose AI models, allowing companies the discretion to sign it. These guidelines aim to comply with the EU AI Act, a pioneering regulation that oversees AI technology with a focus on transparency, safety, and security. However, Google did voice apprehensions regarding the potential negative impact of the guidelines on technological progress. Walker pointed out that the AI Act and the accompanying code could impede the development and implementation of AI in Europe. He warned that alterations to EU copyright laws and requirements that could expose trade secrets might undermine European competitiveness in the AI field. Earlier this month, Meta firmly rejected the EU's AI code, labeling it as excessive and likely to stifle industry growth. Joel Kaplan, head of global affairs at Meta, criticized the move, stating that it creates legal ambiguities for developers and imposes constraints that extend beyond the intentions of the AI Act.
