Google issues apology, incident report for hours-long cloud outage

Google has issued a formal apology following a significant outage that disrupted operations across more than 70 of its cloud services. The company attributed the downtime, which occurred on Thursday, to a series of flawed updates that compounded the issue, leading to hours of service interruptions for users worldwide. The outage impacted a variety of third-party services, including well-known platforms such as Cloudflare, OpenAI, and Shopify. First-party applications like Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Drive, and Google Meet were also affected, causing considerable frustration among users. In its incident report released late Friday, Google expressed regret, stating, "We deeply apologize for the impact this outage has had. Our customers trust their businesses to Google, and we acknowledge the breach of that trust." Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud, took to social media to reiterate the company's remorse, stating his regret over the disruption experienced by customers. According to the incident report, a new feature introduced in May—meant to enhance automated incoming request evaluations—was not adequately tested in real-world scenarios. This oversight resulted in the system's inability to properly process blank entries, which subsequently triggered a cascade of failures across Google's cloud data centers. Engineers identified the root cause within ten minutes; however, the effects lingered for an additional seven hours as the situation escalated, overwhelming larger regions. The report noted that Google did not implement feature flags, a standard industry practice that allows for gradual rollouts to mitigate risks. This lack of precaution allowed the issue to proliferate before it could be contained. In response to this incident, Google has committed to overhauling its architecture to ensure that if one component fails, others can continue functioning. The company also plans to conduct a comprehensive audit of its systems and enhance both automated and human communication strategies to ensure customers receive timely updates during issues. This commitment aims to restore confidence and prevent similar occurrences in the future.
