In a groundbreaking development, Google, a subsidiary of Alphabet, is reportedly engaging in talks with SpaceX and other launch service providers regarding its ambitious orbital data center project, known as Project Suncatcher. According to a report by Reuters, this initiative aims to create a solar-powered AI cloud in space. The vision for Project Suncatcher involves networking satellites equipped with Google's advanced Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) in Earth's orbit. An initial prototype launch is being targeted for around 2027, in partnership with Planet Labs. This potential collaboration could represent a significant partnership between Elon Musk and a rival in the AI space, particularly given Musk's previous criticisms of Google's AI strategies. Notably, Musk co-founded OpenAI in 2015 partly in response to concerns about the direction of AI development at Google, stemming from disagreements with co-founder Larry Page over safety issues. Both Google and SpaceX are evidently pursuing similar goals in developing orbital AI infrastructure, with a focus on creating data centers that can manage and support future AI workloads. Such orbital data centers are anticipated to play a critical role in SpaceX’s plans for an initial public offering, necessitating substantial capital investment and technological innovation. Recently, AI startup Anthropic also announced plans to utilize the full computing capabilities of SpaceX's Colossus 1 facility in Memphis. They have shown interest in collaborating with SpaceX on the development of extensive space-based orbital data centers, potentially reaching multiple gigawatts of power. As discussions progress, Google remains tight-lipped about the financial implications and timelines of the project, aside from the envisioned prototype mission set for 2027.
