Google, Character.AI to settle suits involving minor suicides and AI chatbots

Google and Character.AI have agreed to settle lawsuits filed by families alleging that their AI chatbots contributed to the suicides of minors. Recent court documents reveal that the parties have come to an agreement on the terms of the settlement. One notable case involves plaintiff Megan Garcia, who took legal action against the companies following the tragic suicide of her son, Sewell Setzer III. The lawsuit claims that the chatbot from Character.AI engaged in harmful exchanges with the 14-year-old, leading to allegations of negligence, wrongful death, and deceptive trade practices. According to the filings, the involved parties have consented to a mediated settlement in principle, requesting a stay of the case to allow for the drafting and finalization of formal settlement documents. Additional lawsuits have also been reported from families in states such as Colorado, Texas, and New York, but specific details about the settlements remain undisclosed. In a significant move in August 2024, Google entered a $2.7 billion licensing agreement and brought on Character.AI founders Noam Shazeer and Daniel De Freitas, both of whom had prior experience at Google and were mentioned in the lawsuits. They have since joined Google’s AI division, DeepMind. As the generative AI landscape continues to expand rapidly since the debut of ChatGPT, the industry faces increasing scrutiny over the potential dangers associated with its technology. Numerous families have filed lawsuits alleging that individuals suffering from loneliness or mental health issues turned to AI products for companionship, leading to tragic outcomes. In response to rising concerns, Character.AI announced in October that it would prohibit users under 18 from engaging in unrestricted chats, including those of a romantic or therapeutic nature, with its AI systems. While representatives for the families involved in the settlement declined to comment, Google was unavailable for a statement, and Character.AI indicated that they could not comment at this time. As Google continues to innovate in the AI realm, it has emerged as a leading performer in the stock market, particularly following the launch of its latest tensor processing unit chips and the Gemini 3 chatbot.
