Google wants Intrinsic to be 'Android of robotics' as it pushes into physical AI

Google is set to make significant strides in the robotics sector by repositioning Intrinsic, its internal robotics software initiative, from the "Other Bets" category into its core operations. This strategic move mirrors the company's successful approach with the Android operating system, which has become a staple across various smartphone manufacturers. Intrinsic is designed to serve as a versatile operating system for robotic systems, akin to how Android powers devices from major brands such as Samsung and Motorola. However, the companies partnering with Intrinsic focus primarily on industrial robotics, including notable names like FANUC, Universal Robots, and KUKA. With the market for general-purpose robots projected to potentially reach $370 billion by 2040, Google sees a vast opportunity as AI technologies begin to transition from digital realms into the physical world. The vision for Intrinsic is clear: it aims to streamline the development process for manufacturers, allowing them to concentrate on solving real-world problems rather than on technical intricacies. CEO Wendy Tan White emphasized the initiative's commitment to accessibility, stating, "It doesn't matter what the hardware is and it doesn't matter what the AI model is. We will help you put that together so you can have access to it." By integrating Intrinsic more closely with Google's expansive AI models, infrastructure, and cloud capabilities, the company hopes to enhance its impact on the robotics landscape. Despite its past challenges in the robotics domain—most notably the sale of Boston Dynamics in 2017—Google is now capitalizing on the recent AI boom to redefine its role in the industry. The company's recent advancements include the introduction of new AI models, Gemini Robotics and Gemini Robotics-ER, which enable generative AI to perform physical tasks. Partnerships with firms like Apptronik and Boston Dynamics signal a focused effort to advance humanoid robotics for manufacturing. Intrinsic's collaboration with Google’s DeepMind unit is expected to foster innovative solutions in manufacturing and logistics, enabling the development of smarter robotic applications. The company’s flagship product, Flowstate, exemplifies this goal, allowing users to create robotic applications through a web-based platform without extensive coding. As demand for smart manufacturing escalates, fueled by the need for efficient production methods, Google is positioning Intrinsic as a key player in the evolving landscape of robotics. The company’s investment in infrastructure and AI capabilities highlights its commitment to harnessing technology for future advancements in this dynamic field.
