Google wants Android Automotive to control more of your car

For over a decade, Android has been gradually integrating into the automotive sector, beginning with the introduction of Android Auto for phones, and evolving into the built-in Android Automotive OS. Despite this progress, Android's influence has largely been confined to the infotainment systems of vehicles. However, recent developments suggest that Google is set to change this dynamic with its new vision for software-defined vehicles (SDVs). Carmakers have historically been protective of the software that operates their vehicles, which is now a critical component as cars become increasingly recognized as 'computers on wheels.' This caution is driven not only by safety concerns but also by the value of the data generated by automotive software. Consequently, the industry has seen a patchwork of software solutions that often include incompatible elements from various suppliers. To address this issue of fragmentation, Google proposes a more robust version of Android Automotive OS tailored specifically for SDVs. As vehicles become more dependent on software for features like remote climate control and smart key functionalities accessible via smartphones, the shift towards a unified software platform appears inevitable. Initially, Google’s foray into automotive technology began with Android Auto, which allowed for phone integration with car displays. The company later pivoted away from the phone-centric approach to emphasize the capabilities of Android Automotive OS, which operates directly on the vehicle itself. This latest initiative marks a significant step in Google’s ongoing automotive journey.
