As we close the chapter on 2025, it's hard to ignore the transformation of Google's AI Overviews. Initially met with skepticism and ridicule, these tools are now gaining traction among users, including myself. Reflecting on the past, I recall a particularly embarrassing moment in 2024 when I tried out Google's bizarre suggestion to use glue to keep cheese on my pizza. It was a moment of internet fame that I’d rather forget, yet it illustrates how far the technology has come. Just a year ago, both my editor and I dismissed the AI Overviews as inadequate. However, we've recently found ourselves relying on them more frequently than traditional search results. The Google AI Overviews debuted in spring 2024, and their early performance was less than stellar, riddled with inaccuracies. One viral incident involved the AI's recommendation to add glue to pizza sauce, seemingly pulled from a joke online. As a journalist, I humorously took that advice to heart, creating a 'glue pizza'—a moment of professional folly that should not be emulated. Despite these initial missteps, ongoing improvements are evident. Users have observed lingering issues, such as the AI's tendency to take nonsensical phrases seriously, creating absurd explanations for made-up idioms. For instance, typing in random sentences followed by 'meaning' would yield bizarre interpretations. I tested this with phrases like 'you can't fit a duck in a pencil,' which surprisingly received detailed explanations. Yet, there is a silver lining. Recently, when I input a fabricated saying like 'you can't tell a yak not to dance,' the AI responded more accurately, acknowledging it as a playful expression rather than a recognized idiom. It's clear that Google's AI Overviews are evolving into something more than just a source of amusement; they are becoming increasingly useful. As I become more accustomed to their responses, I've learned to craft queries that align with their strengths, leading to more successful outcomes. It seems that the journey from clumsy to clever is well underway.
