Amid new competition, Chrome speeds up its release schedule

In a bold move to stay ahead in the browser market, Google has announced a significant change to its Chrome release schedule. Starting September 2026, the tech giant will reduce its update timeline from four weeks to just two. This means users can expect new features and improvements related to stability, speed, and user experience at a much faster rate. Google’s shift comes as AI-driven browsers like OpenAI's ChatGPT Atlas and Perplexity's Comet begin to gain traction. These competitors are redesigning browsing experiences to automate tasks on users' behalf, posing a potential challenge to Chrome's long-standing dominance. ChatGPT Atlas stands out with its integrated AI assistant, while Perplexity’s Comet offers an AI helper alongside various productivity tools for its subscribers. Amid this rising competition, Google is also enhancing its Gemini integrations within Chrome, introducing autonomous features aimed at streamlining user tasks. Although Google has stated that the accelerated release schedule is not a direct response to AI advancements, the timing suggests otherwise. The revamped schedule will kick off with the beta and stable versions of Chrome (version 153) on September 8, 2026, encompassing all platforms, including desktop, Android, and iOS. However, Google will maintain the existing eight-week cycle for the Extended Stable release, which is tailored for enterprise users and those requiring additional time to manage updates. Chromebook users will also retain access to this option, ensuring flexibility for various user needs.
