Google is making a significant shift by phasing out Assistant in favor of its new AI, Gemini, within Google Maps. This transition is beginning today, with Gemini set to enhance features for navigation and location insights, although the complete takeover will unfold gradually. In the interim, users will still find Google Assistant functioning in Maps, dependent on how the app is accessed. Gemini promises to elevate the conversational experience, allowing users to issue more intricate commands compared to its predecessor. For instance, rather than simply listing nearby vegan restaurants, Gemini can provide tailored suggestions based on specific user queries. Moreover, Maps will incorporate a specialized Gemini version of Lens for post-parking inquiries. By simply pointing the camera at nearby landmarks or eateries, users will receive immediate answers to their questions, offering a more interactive experience than the standard Lens available in the Google app. Google acknowledges the challenges of AI, including the potential for inaccuracies, but insists that this version of Gemini is designed to minimize such issues. The AI is informed by extensive data from Google's vast catalog of place listings and Street View imagery, making it less prone to generating incorrect location information. However, Google emphasizes that Gemini will not influence route selection for users.
