The Golden Globes have made a notable addition this year by introducing a best podcast category, a move that has sparked considerable discussion. The six nominees for this inaugural award include popular titles such as "Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard," "Call Her Daddy," "Good Hang with Amy Poehler," "The Mel Robbins Podcast," "SmartLess," and NPR’s "Up First." These selections, which encompass a diverse array of topics ranging from news to celebrity interviews, were culled from an initial shortlist of 25 programs deemed eligible by the Globes. In a calculated effort to avoid political controversy, the nominations notably excluded many high-profile podcasts, particularly those with a conservative bent like "The Megyn Kelly Show," "The Tucker Carlson Show," and the hugely popular "The Joe Rogan Experience." This decision, which also left out left-leaning programs like "Pod Save America," raised eyebrows among commentators, suggesting that the awards show is keen to present itself as an inclusive, non-partisan celebration of entertainment. Ben Bogardus, a journalism professor at Quinnipiac University, emphasized that the Globes' voting body is likely trying to distance itself from any potential controversies that could arise from inviting contentious podcast hosts. According to Bogardus, this approach is an effort to position the awards as accessible and mainstream, steering clear of any political drama. The response to the omission of politically charged podcasts was relatively muted, with only a few social media users expressing their opinions. Notably, Ben Shapiro had campaigned vigorously for a nomination, highlighting his podcast's discussions with influential figures like U.S. Vice President JD Vance and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy over the past year. The selection criteria for eligible podcasts include the necessity for original content and a minimum of six episodes released between January 1, 2025, and September 30, 2025, each with a duration of at least 30 minutes. The award ceremony, hosted by Nikki Glaser, is set to take place on January 11 and aims to honor the "quality, creativity, audience engagement and impact" of podcasts. While many in the podcasting community welcomed this recognition, there remains some confusion about the criteria for determining the best podcast. Karl Hughes, a podcasting veteran, expressed concerns that the selection process might overlook the nuances that define quality in podcasting. The announcement also raised questions regarding the role of Luminate Data, the analytics firm responsible for curating the shortlist, and its affiliation with Penske Media Corp., which owns the Globes. This relationship could imply potential conflicts of interest, especially considering the financial implications for traditional advertising in media outlets owned by the same company. Despite the controversies, this move marks a significant milestone for podcasting as it gains traction within the mainstream entertainment industry. Hughes noted that the inclusion of podcasts in a major awards show signifies the medium’s evolution and growing acceptance as a legitimate form of storytelling, comparable to television and film. Bogardus echoed this sentiment, reflecting on how podcasting has matured over the last 25 years, providing hosts with a platform for creative freedom that is often lacking in other media. As the Golden Globes prepare to recognize the best in podcasting, many hope this will pave the way for broader appreciation and accessibility of the medium, opening doors for diverse voices and stories in the podcasting landscape.
